When 10-year-old Lauren was approaching her birthday, she decided to celebrate in a way that would make a real difference. Inspired by her dream of becoming a veterinarian (sparked by her love of Dr. Oakley, Yukon Vet) and moved by stories she’d heard from a family friend about the work of the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Society (VAMMR), Lauren chose to turn her birthday into a fundraiser for marine animals in need.
Instead of presents, she asked for donations and found creative ways to fundraise.

This generous contribution will help provide essential things like medications, vitamins, formula, and fish for our patients.
"I decided to fundraise for the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Society because I love animals. When I grow up, I want to be a veterinarian, and I watch Dr. Oakley, Yukon Vet all the time—she’s my hero!
I chose VAMMR because they rescue sick marine animals and help them get better. I wanted to help them because I can’t rescue animals myself yet, but I can raise money to help the people who can.
One day, I hope I can work with animals like they do and maybe even help marine animals too!" — Lauren
She chose “Oakley” in honour of her veterinary hero and “Sinclair” after Canadian soccer legend Christine Sinclair.
Now, at just 11 years old, Lauren is already making a real difference. Her compassion and creativity show that every contribution, big or small, helps make marine mammal rescue possible. Lauren’s birthday gift is helping give marine mammals a second chance at life, and she’s proving that anyone can be part of protecting the ocean and the animals who call it home.
